Getting Furry with Kitty :: Giveaway

So in 7 weeks [doesn't time fly :-)] The Cold Kiss of Death :: Spellcrackers.com book 2 :: is released into the wilds of book shops and online booksellers, and to continue my celebratory giveaways to help get the word out, here's this weeks contest - Getting Furry with Kitty*!

I love Carrie Vaughn's Kitty the Werewolf books, Kitty is one of my most favourite characters, as are werewolves in general. But when it came to writing my own books and deciding on what paranormal creatures would inhabit my world - and whilst I have fae that can take the shape of animals, such as kelpies and phoukas - I decided against werewolves for one very good reason.

Wolves are extinct in the wild in the UK**

My spellcrackers.com books are set in the UK and wolves have been extinct here for at least a couple of hundred years, thanks to a combination of humans hunting them and their natural habitats disappearing [again due to humans]. Doing a bit of googling some extensive research, I've found some info which gives a rough idea of when these beautiful animals probably died out in various parts of the British Isles.

Wales: possibly in the 12th century
England: 1500-1550
Scotland: 1680-1769
Ireland: 1710-1770

So sadly, the only way werewolves are likely to appear in my books are if they're tourists.

An American Werewolf in London***

But onto this week's giveaway. To win your choice of one of Carrie Vaughn's werewolf books plus a signed copy of either The Sweet Scent of Blood or The Cold Kiss of Death leave me a comment telling me your favourite werewolf from fiction, TV or film.

I comment = 1 entry

Please help me spread the word about the release of The Cold Kiss of Death and the giveaways with a mention of the giveaway on your blog/live journal/myspace/facebook/twitter/etc [post the link to the mention into the comments again] and win yourself more entries into this week's giveaway :-) 1 link = 1 entry

Which means you could end up with more entries into the metaphorical hat, so what are you waiting for? Get posting and linking!! Good Luck!!

x/posted to my LJ: leave a comment here or there. Contest ends end of day [anywhere] Wednesday 3rd June 2009.

* Don't you just love a werewolf called Kitty. LOL!

** I know, I have vampires, and faeries, and goblins, and trolls, and none of them are real [no really they're not ... unless of course, you know different :-)] so why should I worry about not having werewolves, just because wolves are extinct here - well, no one ever said this writing business was logical, did they?! LOL!

*** not that this picture in any way impugns any American tourist that has ever visited, or will ever visit London.
David Naughton [The American Werewolf] in the flesh! What a hottie!

Hot Wasabi Peas at Forbidden Planet, Southampton this Saturday!!!

So, this Saturday, I'm going to be at Forbidden Planet in Southampton along with my writerly buddies, Alex Bell and Jaine Fenn

This is us at Forbidden Planet in London back in February :-)

But I'm a tiny, bit worried ... Why? I hear you ask. Well, I've just read this on Alex's blog ...

'This Saturday, from 1-2pm, I will be signing copies of Jasmyn at the Forbidden Planet store in Southampton. This is your chance to get signed copies of Jasmyn a full three weeks prior to its publication. Be the envy of all your friends etc. Jaine Fenn and Suzanne McLeod will also be there, signing copies of their books:'

http://forbiddenplanet.com/Signings.html

Okay, that's not the worrying bit, signing books I can do :-) and believe me you'll want to get your hands on an early copy of Jasmyn *has jealous moment about Alex's brilliant writing* and then there's the chance to get Jaine's new book Consorts of Heaven early too *has another jeal...* So y'know, you really should come and see us all :-)

BUT!!!

THIS IS THE WORRYING BIT!!!

Alex says ...

'I’m a little concerned to have seen this event listed in some places on the internet as a “Singles Event”. Er . . . I’m not sure why. Please note, this is not speed dating (at least, I don’t think it is). It is a book signing. You therefore do not need to bring us flowers to get us to sign books. But you can if you want (I like lillies).'

But on a happier note, she also says this ...

'So if you would like to get a signed copy of one - or all of - our masterpieces, then we would love to see you on Saturday. Depending on weather and so on, my Dinky Dane may be wandering about on the high street outside at some point (closely supervised by a family member, of course), and there will be a tin of Hot Wasabi Peas floating around the signing table (the three of us are the Princesses of Fantasy Fiction, after all), which anyone is welcome to sample.*

So there you have it: three very good reasons to come to Forbidden Planet on Saturday. You’ve got signed books, a possible sighting of a Great Dane puppy and the chance to eat a Hot Wasabi Pea** and live to tell the tale. Oh, and I’m bringing the tortoises too. They will be stumping about Forbidden Planet for the duration of the signing. Only kidding. Or am I . . . ? (No, Madam, the tortoises are not for sale. There is no barcode. Please put them down.)'

And not only do you have those three very good reasons, but there will also be Party Rings to munch on [for those not brave enough to try the peas *g*] Yay!!

*Alex Bell cannot accept liability for any projectile vomiting, choking, burning tongue, personal injury or premature death resulting from eating the Hot Wasabi Peas. Consume entirely at your own risk. Do not consume if you are fatally allergic to peas. Do not consume if you are fatally allergic to wasabi. Do not inhale the Wasabi Peas or attempt to insert into nostril. Hot Wasabi Peas are for consumption purposes only.

**Consumption of one or more peas constitutes a legally binding undertaking to purchase at least ten copies of each of our books, despite any oral representations to the contrary.

Russian Deal News

Yay! I'm utterly delighted that the first two Spellcrackers.com books - The Sweet Scent of Blood and The Cold Kiss of Death are to be published in Russian by Azbooka. My heartfelt thanks to Azbooka, Gollancz and John Jarrold for making this happen.

Buffy to Return???

A new Buffy movie - but no Joss, and nothing to do with the TV series! Umm?? More Buffy = Yay! No Joss = Not so good ...

Excerpt Monday :: The Sweet Scent of Blood

It's Excerpt Monday organized by the lovely Bria Quinlan and Mel Berthier from Romance Divas. For my excerpt I'm posting a piece from The Sweet Scent of Blood :: Chapter 4.

Check out the Excerpt Monday,May blog for links to all the authors participating as there are plenty of fantastic excerpts to get your reading teeth into [full list under the cut]

My fang-filled excerpt :-) ...

‘Your website picture does you an injustice,’ the vampire said. ‘You are so much more in the flesh and . . . blood.’

‘Sorry I can’t return the sentiment,’ I said.

He gently shook his head. ‘Tut tut, Genevieve.’ He took a step towards me. ‘You really don’t mean that. Not when I have been waiting especially for you.’

I hardened my voice. ‘Then you’ve wasted your time. My visit’s with the police, not you.’

The Vampire took another step, fast, calculated to spook me. I swallowed hard, but held my ground. He stopped within touching distance. Long slim fingers brushed a lock of hair from his forehead while he studied me. ‘Intriguing.’ Half-closed eyes gave him a sleepy, enigmatic look. ‘Why would you involve yourself in something not your affair?’

cont ...
‘It’s really none of your business.’

‘But that’s where you’re wrong, Genevieve.’ The words drifted lazy and sweet through the air. ‘You see, this really is my business. I am tasked with bringing this little episode to a satisfactory conclusion for all concerned. I will do better without your . . . help.’

When what he had said sank in, rather than the dream of his voice, surprise tumbled through me, banishing the feeling of languor that had seeped into my bones. ‘Who says your conclusion would be satisfactory for everyone?’

He grinned, letting me glimpse fang, a push of mesma inviting me to go along with the joke. ‘Why, I do, of course.’

‘Uh-huh.’ I nodded slowly. ‘Sounds good.’ I gave him a smile. A wide happy beam of a smile.

Satisfaction lit his face, but before he could speak, I dropped the smile. ‘Only it doesn’t sound quite good enough.’ I winked. ‘But hey. Nice try.’

He laughed, and the sound bubbled through me like champagne. I shivered even as sweat trickled down my spine. I gripped the strap of my bag with both hands, holding it like a life-line, concentrating on keeping him out of my mind. The longer he talked, the more the back of my neck throbbed, reminding me I was more vulnerable than usual.

‘Genevieve.’ He shrugged an elegant shoulder. ‘What are we to do now?’

I stared at him, surprised. ‘You’re asking me?’

He indicated the police station. ‘Once you walk through that door, you make yourself defenceless.’

For a moment part of me actually felt he cared. I bit the inside of my mouth, hard, to banish the feeling.

‘You dispense with all that wonderful witch protection you have carefully cultivated.’ He spread his hands wide. ‘You are fair game.’

‘Tell me something I don’t know.’

‘Are you so eager to offer your blood?’

‘What do you think?’

‘Such bravado.’ He glanced at the door again, a vague anxiety in the action. ‘But even your sidhe magic will not shield you from some amongst us.’

‘Are you done yet? Because so far I’m not hearing anything new.’

He sighed, the sound coating me with remorse. ‘Go home, Genevieve, while you still can.’

‘What? Just leave?’ I stopped strangling the strap of my bag and clenched my fists, digging my nails into my palms, determined to resist the impulse he’d given me to go home. ‘When you haven’t even threatened me yet?’

Something dark and sad appeared in his eyes, then it was gone, hidden by the same enigmatic look as before.

‘Threats . . . Coercion . . . Violence.’ The words hung like blades in the still air. ‘Is that what you would want?’

I froze, pulse speeding up, unable to move or speak, gazing into his eyes. A voice screamed in my mind, yelling at me to break his mesma, but another part of me wanted, desperately needed, whatever he was offering.

Cool fingers circled my left wrist and lifted my still clenched fist between us. My hand moved, seemingly of its own violation, opening like a flower before the sun. Blood welled in the half-moon marks across my palm, bright against my skin.

‘May I?’ His eyes echoed the silken seduction in his voice.

My lips parted in a sigh as my head bowed in submission.

Anger flashed across his face and his fingers squeezed, the bones in my wrist grating with the pain. ‘Say. It.’

‘Yes,’ I breathed.

For an instant his pupils glowed red and my heart fluttered with sudden terror, then he dipped his head. I gazed at the line of his jaw, the long dark lashes, the sleek silk of his hair where it curled round the intricate whorl of his ear, its lobe pierced through, a single gem black against his pale skin. His lips caressed my palm, a shudder rippled through his body and I felt an answering shimmer resonate through my own. My eyes closed as he licked hot lines along my hand. Sharp fangs scraped my wrist and chill air kissed my bare skin.

Leaves rustled in the stillness and a horse whinnied from the nearby stables, startling me out of my reverie.

I opened my eyes to an empty street.

The vampire was gone.

I stared down at my palm. The cuts from my nails had disappeared, healed over as though they’d never been. A bracelet of bruises around my wrist was the only evidence of his presence.

‘Genevieve.’ My name whispered through the breeze.

Writing Characters in Love :: Giveaway draw

Yay! Thank you to everyone who entered last weeks Giveaway for The Cold Kiss of Death and for helping to get the news out. At the end of this post are the details of this week’s giveaway : -)

But first …

We’ve had more celebrations in our house this week as it was our wedding anniversary! Hubby and I have been married for sixteen wonderful years : -) We spent a lovely day together taking it easy, reading, walking our dogs, going out for a romantic meal and reminiscing about our lives together and ultimately about how we met.

Like a lot of other folk, we met through work. We both worked for the same retail company, both of us had been there for about a year, and we were both store management. Similar jobs, similar interests and similar working hours; so far, so normal . . . except we didn’t work together, we actually worked [and lived] 400 miles apart! Luck, or fate, or serendipity sat us next to each other on an Interpersonal Skills Course LOL! And we put those skills we learnt to good use over the next year as we got to know each other, [it was a heck of a commute] fell in love and reorganised our lives so we could be together. *Big Happy Sigh*

Which brings me to: Writing Characters in Love …

I love reading romances [paranormal or otherwise : -)] and one of the things writers have to do is find a way for their romantic partners/lovebirds to get together and stay together until they reach their Happy Ever After [i.e. The End of the book : -)] Making our Lovebirds work/attend college/live next door is an easy and natural choice, as is having friends or family introduce them, or even letting them see each other across a crowded room and exchange phone numbers, after all that’s how a lot of real-life couples meet. Then there’s getting our lovebirds together through some something that gives them a mutual goal: like a hobby or evening class, or saving the local school from closure, or even a holiday [or if you're like me - a murder always works well *g*].

Harder to pull off is the ‘chance meeting’, partly because fiction needs to make sense, and while coincidences happen in real life, they are often seen as less than stellar plotting. So in fiction ‘chance meetings’ are hardly ever what they seem. [frex: when Joanne Baldwin meets a stranger on the road in Rachel Caine’s Weather Warden series] But even in real life it’s rare for a chance meeting to result in two people spending enough time together to fall in love without some outside force ‘forcing’ them to pair up [The film Forces of Nature with Ben Affleck and Sandra Bullock is a good example of a chance meeting] unless both partners making a deliberate effort to see each other again.

But if our lovebirds meet, fall instantly into attraction/love and decide they’re going to make a go of it [much like hubby and me : -)] then their journey to ‘The End’ will be a relatively uneventful series of ‘dates’ that are much more interesting to the ‘datees’ than to those reading about them, plus the journey is likely to be over pretty quick, so what’s needed in fiction is some conflict.

BRANDED BY FIRE :: BERKLEY BOOKS :: July 2009

Though DarkRiver sentinel Mercy is feeling the pressure to mate, she savagely resists when Riley Kincaid, a lieutenant from the SnowDancer pack, tries to possess her. The problem is not simply that he pushes her buttons; the problem is that he’s a wolf, she’s a cat, and they’re both used to being on top.

But when a brilliant changeling researcher is kidnapped from DarkRiver territory, Mercy and Riley must work together to track the young man—before his shadowy captors decide he’s no longer useful. Along the way, the two dominants may find that submitting to one another uncovers not just a deadly conspiracy, but a passion so raw that it’ll leave them both branded by fire…

If you’ve read any of Nalini Singh’s books, then you’ll know she’s a master at writing romances and in Branded by Fire she’s got two characters who, while attracted to each other find reasons to deny that attraction [adding that necessary conflict ; -)] but because they end up working together, [meaning there’s no chance of walking away and letting the attraction fizzle out] the attraction deepens and they’re soon clashing and rubbing each other the wrong, or more likely the right way, to their exciting Happy Ever After.
