Eternal Kisses in Mean Streets : Giveaway

20 days, 2 hours 46 mins and 23 seconds - tick, tock - [as I write this] until The Cold Kiss of Death :: Spellcrackers.com book 2 :: is published, and Woot! am I getting excited? You bet I am *g*. And nervous too, as I hope everyone will love it as much as I do*. This week to continue my celebratory giveaways to help get the word out, I'm going with anthologies - Mean Kiss.

I have a strange ambivalent relationship with anthologies of short stories. On the one hand I never feel quite as enthusiastic when starting to read a short story as I do a book, because just as I end up getting to know the characters and enjoying spending time with them- bam! - the story's finished. I call it the Cinderella syndrome. Give me a nice fat book anytime :-).

But on the other hand, reading anthologies is a really great way of experiencing that first-date excitement when I discover a new author and think 'Wow! I've got to read more like this!'. Then there's the third hand [hey, I write fantasy, I can have as many hands as I want *g*] which is when I get to read short stories about characters I already love such as Harry Dresden in Mean Streets. Yay!

So onto this week's giveaway ...

Here's what and how you can win: leave a comment telling me if you've ever found a new author through a short story or not, and the first commentator drawn by Random.org will win their choice out of The Eternal Kiss : Twelve Vampire Tales of Blood and Desire*** or Mean Streets plus a signed copy of either The Cold Kiss of Death, or The Sweet Scent of Blood. Second commentator drawn will win the other book. Contest open to all, and finishes end of day [anywhere] Wednesday 1st July 2009.

I comment = 1 entry

Follow me = 1 entry**

Please help me spread the word about the release of The Cold Kiss of Death and the giveaways with a mention of the giveaway on your blog/live journal/myspace/facebook/twitter/etc [post the link to the mention into the comments again] and win yourself more entries into this week's giveaway :-) 1 link = 1 entry

ETA: 29th June 22.27 - there are now 67 commentators!! if commentators hit 70; then I'll give away 3 copies of The Eternal Kiss ... If commentators hit 90 then I'll give away 4 copies and if we pass the magical 100 mark then I'll be giving away 5 copies! Yay! so more links mean more comments and more chances to win :-)

ETA: 30th June 15.05
- there are now 103 commentators in all, we've passed the magical 100!!! So I will now be giving away 5 copies of The Eternal Kiss to 5 lucky commentators instead of 1. Thanks so much to everyone who's entered so far.

Which means you could end up with more entries into the metaphorical hat, so what are you waiting for? Get posting and linking!! Good Luck!!

x/posted to my LJ: leave a comment here or there.

* Lovevampires.com has a special advance review up of The Cold Kiss of Death. Here's part of what it says . . .

The Cold Kiss of Death [is] an exciting and satisfyingly complex read. The book's cover promises magic, mayhem and murder and there is no shortage of any of these things. Genny makes a realistically likable yet suitably kick-ass heroine who keeps fighting to the end. Throw in an imaginatively realised fantasy London . . . and it's clear that this book is a sure-fire winner for fantasy fans. Read the full review here

** There will be an extra giveaway just for my followers when The Cold Kiss of Death releases on the 16th July - yep, I resorting to bribery now in order to feel the love! LOL!

*** Look at the fab list of authors - including one fantastic new author you should all look out for Karen Mahoney who has her first short story published in The Eternal Kiss, which is published on the 7th July! Congratulations Karen!

But the one I recently remember is Christopher Moore. And surprisingly he had written an introduction in the book and not one of the short stories. But his intro was so cool I knew I had to read something he has written.

Hey Suzanne,
To be honest with you I absolutely love short story anthologies as you can find authors that way. I used them a lot in my youth when finances were tight to try and find new authors (mainly the forgotten realms ones in those days, LOL.)

I'd love to get a copy of that book, firstly because a number of names are known but Ive never read a couple of them before and it would be good to see how they measured up against others in the genre.

Always good value, always something different and, if you'll excuse the pun, managable bites can be taken during brief breaks to help you through your working day.

Anthologies are how I've found most of my fantasy writers, honestly. When I was younger, I used to pick up the Sword and Sorceress series and read them, then find books by the authors within that I like. That's how I found Diana Paxon, Mercedes Lackey, and Holly Lisle. Along with Marion Zimmer Bradly, of course.

Hi Suzanne! Although I usually prefer novels, anthologies are great when I'm reading a hardback that won't fit in my purse, or I forgot to bring a book with me to read at lunch. And there are a few authors I really came to know through their short stories first---Tanith Lee, for example (her story "When the Clock Strikes" is still one of my favorite short stories of all time). And I'm not sure this counts, but reading Patricia Briggs' "Alpha and Omega" story in the anthology On the Prowl really piqued my interest in that series, though I'll confessed I'd already started the Mercy Thompson series (and enjoyed it!).
Great question!
I am following you on Twitter and Google, and tweeted about the contest (but probably did it wrong). Peace!

Just found this blog and am most delighted at the discovery! :D I have Tweeted about it here http://twitter.com/HannahENurse although possibly not like a normal person.

As for short stories...well, I love them. Not as much as 'proper' books because you cannot get attached to the characters or have an intricate plot which are things I love, but if they're well written then I love them anyway. The only trouble is, I am not very good at remembering who wrote them!

However I did find Margaret Mahy through her short story 'Cat and Mouse' which I loved as a child and so looked her up when I grew up and found the 'catalogue search by author' machine in my library. And now adore every one of her books I've been able to find.

I only have on anthology, The Mammoth Book of Paranormal Romance, but as my TBR pile is so huge, I haven't got round to reading it yet. I'm looking forward to reading Jeaniene Frost's Pack, and Rachel Caine's Blue Crush. There are other authors in this book who's novels are either in my TBR pile right now, or I want them to be: Carrie Vaughn, Kelle Armstrong, Ilona Andrews, Maria V. Snyder, Lori Devoti, Alyssa Day, and Meljean Brook. I have to say I get kind of worried at the idea of reading short stories by authors whose novels I've not yet read, in case they spoil the novels for me. Yet I don't know if I'll get round to picking up some of the authors I don't know about if I don't try the short stories. Dilemma, dilemma.

However, there are some great authors in The Eternal Kiss, and I NEED that book! Even if I will argue with myself about reading the stories or not, haha!

Also, I love anthologies for getting a quick introduction to new authors. I tend to read the ones I know first, then go back to read the rest, i've earmarked a few authors over the last few years to explore further.
I also like how anthologies can give an author a chance to do a shorter story with the same cast that wouldn't fit the rest of the series as a novel. Kat Richardson's story in Mean Streets is a great little side story to what is going on with Harper and the grey and answers questions about how it's affected by beliefs.

Hello! I found your website through Lili St. Crow's blog and you can consider yourself bookmarked. I'm always in the market for a new fav author. :)

As for anthologies, I can't think of any specific authors which I found that way, but I've certainly met a genre or two. I was rummaging through a boyfriend's bookshelf one day and found an anthology of stories from the old White Wolf game Demon. Until then I had never even conceived of urban fantasy and I devoured that book multiple times over that summer. I'd love to find another copy of it one of these days as it's one I've never forgotten.

More than often i already new about the author but didn't take the step of buying their book , not knowing if i'd like them. So when i found myself faced with anthology featuring those authors it is a great opportunity.
I often buy the anthology for ONE author and end up addicted to other authors from it.

And I most definitely discovered authors this way. Sharon Shinn from "The Sorcerer's Assassin" Simon R. Green's short story "The Nightside, Needless to Say" from the anthology The Powers of Detection: Stories of Mystery & Fantasy. Angela Knight and Emma Holly from various anthologies (they seem to do a lot of these) and Patricia Brigg from "The Price" in Silver Birch, Blood Moon anthology.

I love reading short stories just for the new authors! It gives me a look at their style and allows me to decide how much I want to try something else by them before I get too attached to the characters.

I don't think I have ever found a author through anthologies. I find alot of authors through books reviews like lovevampires.com. That is how I heard from you. I still haven't read for first book but it looks amazing. I didn't even know you where on twitter. Here's to you and your book.

Yup, I've absolutely found new authors through anthologies. And occasionally, I'm obsessive enough about an author to track down all the anthologies they've participated in.

I pretty much agree with you- reading short stories always leaves me feeling unsatisfied. But I realized when I bought Cravings to "stalk" Laurell K. Hamilton that hey... these are some characters I'd like to get to know better- and now have read all of Maryjanice Davidson's books as well. So now I buy most anthologies that feature a favourite author, and usually I find a new one to get to know better- which is a must when you're a bookworm like me. http://www.baroquew.info/wordpress/

Yes, I have found plenty of authors from just the short stories. In my literature class at junior college here in California, we all had a literature companion book with several short stories to get a sample of the author's work! Most short stories that have led me to great authors are 19th century classic stories and authors!

Hi!
I discovered Tanya Huff and Charlaine Harris in an anthology, and I now faithfully read both authors...Tanya Huff's Books of Blood and Charlaine Harris's Harper Connelly series! When I say anything about Charlaine Harris people always assume I'm into Sookie Stackhouse, and lots have never heard of Harper Connelly, so I hope that I turn them on to something new!

I have the same strange ambivalent relationship with anthologies of short stories... BUT, I won't let that stand in the way of saying I'd love to win The Eternal Kiss and The Sweet Scent of Blood. *grin*

Where to start? I have found so many authors through short story anthologies. I guess my favorite would be the finding of Kim Harrison from reading Dates From Hell. I'd picked up the book looking forward to reading more from Kelley Armstrong and was pleasantly rewarded to find Kim and many others inside. I have a long list of "to reads" from authors from anthologies and now I pick them up just to find new morsels to devour.

I've definitely found authors through anthologies. I buy the anthologies to read the short stories by an author I'm already familiar with and end up with at least one or two more authors to look up afterward. I do prefer full-length novels to most short stories, though, for the same reason you gave.

I am also a follower. :)

I enjoy reading anthologies when they have stories by several authors I like, catching on to new authors from them is a bit hit and miss for me though

I've read recently "The Mammoth Book of Paranormal Romance", some of those 24 stories are pretty good and from completely new authors (for me)

I've found several by using anthologies, Richelle Mead and Marjorie M. Liu to name a couple.

I am so glad I made it :D Just in time

Have never found anyone through a short story, but then again I can't count the stories I have read on one hand. I really need to read more of those too and not just books.

I've never read an anthology! :) I found your blog through Kelley Armstrong's Twitter.

Of course I've found new authors through anthologies! It's my favorite way to find them, as you get a sampling of their work before you try to jump in to a full length novel of theirs. Rachel Caine's Morganville Vampire series is one example of mine ^^

Yes, definitely, I've found new authors via anthologies. Some of my favorites, in fact.

Hope I win Eternal Kiss :-)
(and would like to start with The Sweet Scent of Blood).

Thanks Bunches!

Actually, I like to use short stories/ anthologies to look for new authors. It's a great way to be exposed to a good handful of authors all in one book!

I found P. N Elrod that way.

Cheers!

I like anthologies for figuring out who to read next, but when the stories are part of a larger series that can be difficult. Often I will check out full-length books by people who share anthologies with my favorite authors.

Looking forward to Eternal Kiss, whether I win or not.

I think I'm one of the few who doesn't use anthologies to read new authors. I've bought anthologies, read a few stories, but never continued reading unless I needed to read it for school.

I find new authors via novels. I usually read short stories from authors I already like, and I can't wait to read Kelley Armstrong's!

Jeni said...

Absolutely! Anthologies are new-author hunting grounds.
My most memorable one has be Laurell. I don't think i would've picked her up in a million years except i ran across this rather irritating little number in a anthology titled Cravings. So that poor copy ended up dented and mangled several siblings and friends readings later and the lot of us collectivly remained unable to figure out just what the hell an ARDEUR was.
I started reading LKH for an answer that has never really come to full fruition but that freakin short story -- in actuality an excerpt from a later book, Narcisus in Chains-- is responsible for the purchase of an excess of 100 copies of LKH books. Mostly hardbound. And that's just between my siblings and immediate friends.
Forget about the poor helpless readers accosted in bookstores for accidently picking up the 7th or 12th book in a series in our presence. They just need a light whack on the head and the begining of the series thrust chronologicaly into their hands.

I discovered Charlaine Harris in a short story book called Bite! it features stories about vampires. There was a never-before-published story from her Southern Vampire Series, and though I was confused, because I didn't know any of the characters, I enjoyed the story so I went and researched the books, and I fell in love with all of the characters: Sookie, Bill, Eric, Sam... the whole cast... then they made the new series True Blood on HBO and though it's different from the books, its great in its own way and I really enjoy it!

Thanks!

My favorite one was, I think Cravings, the anthology with Laurell K. Hamilton. It was a short of Anita Blake and it ended with Damion and Nathaniel and Anita doing some freaky stuff, and I thought to myself "that can't be IT!" So I went out and found out that there was a whole series of books that came before that short story, and got thoroughly and completely addicted to Laurell.

yah L - i think half my fascination with Kelley Armstrong has been her short stories. she's actually the one to remind me to get on here for the contest.
I started with her otherworld series books 3 and 4 but quickly realized my error and located 1 and 2 and very soon after that i located kelley's website. OMG i luuuv her version of a short story. they're like small books. I used to email them to myself in pieces so i could read them on my phone when i was away from the computer(this was pre-true phone internet where all you could do was basic stuff. nav a website was near impossible). then she developed the free pdf download and i could read them on my palm. and at points i gave in and printed out entire stories and put them in a binder.
Now some of them are bound in real bookform and are selling for charity and others are next on the list. i'm glad to see the MEN of the otherworld finally published. but sad to see the stories go from the website.
i used to use the website and free shorts as a lure to get people to take Kelley for a test drive before they had to commit to a hardbound.
but publishers are publishers.
We cant beat them and can't live without the book supply.

I've read a few anthologies...To be honest I only started reading them (outside of school)because of Kelley Armstrong. Many of her short stories about characters from her series are in anthology books. I get the books for those and like to enjoy the other ones as well. So its a recently discovered way to find new authors (for me), which is great because I'm always going through books like there's no tomorrow.
